Government Initiatives Boosting Biogas Production in India

In 2024, the Indian government has intensified its efforts to promote biogas production, aligning with its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced several initiatives and policies aimed at increasing the adoption and production of biogas across the country.

One of the major initiatives is the implementation of the National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme (NBOMP), which aims to set up biogas plants in rural areas. This program provides financial assistance to farmers and rural households to construct biogas plants, which can help in managing agricultural waste and producing clean energy.

Additionally, the government has introduced subsidies and incentives for industries and businesses to invest in biogas technology. This move is expected to attract private investments and foster public-private partnerships in the biogas sector. The MNRE has also been working on creating awareness and providing training to farmers and rural entrepreneurs on the benefits and technical aspects of biogas production.

These initiatives are expected to significantly increase the number of biogas plants in India, contributing to the country’s renewable energy targets and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Moreover, the production of biogas will help in managing organic waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.
